'A club where it is enjoyable to learn the art of fencing'

A weekend with Tristan Parris

8th & 9th Dec 2007 - Comber Leisure Centre

Some call him Mr Parris, others simply Tristan
– but at Stormont we simply say ‘The MASTER’!

The first weekend in December saw over 20 fencers attending an intensive training session under the watchful eye of Tristan Parris. What a few days it was. Some people managed both days and other attended on just one of them. Whichever it was everyone agreed, although very hard work, the training was excellent.

Each day commenced, as you would expect, with a warm up and plenty of footwork. The fun but effective ways that footwork was introduced and practiced was an eye opener to many, everything ad that element of fun but at the same time it was presented in a very structured and well planned way, each exercise building on the last and preparing for the next. Different levels of fencers were all included and pushed to their own levels and abilities both within the group work and on a 1-2-1 basis with blade work later in the day.

Some blade work was then done with individual lessons and plenty of interesting variations introduced to the fencing to make us all practice what we had learnt. Fun scoring methods, hits only counting if certain moves or target area was used, back to zero on off targets, and many many other different and interesting scenarios. Each and everyone was carefully explained and targeted to develop on what we had already learnt.

After lunch and a short warm up the afternoon included a reduced footwork session and more fencing wit Tristan giving more 1-2-1 lessons and also finding time to work with everyone on the boxes to ensure his messages were driven home.

We would like to thank Tristan for coming up to Comber, the members of other fencing clubs who attended and look forward to welcoming him again sometime in 2008.

Stormont Fencing Club are planning more training weekends for 2008 with both our local NI coach, Tristan and possible others if time and interest allows. Watch our web site for more details, information, dates and booking will all be available on-line as and when available.
